Climate Change and Business: Demystifying Science, Risk and Reward
“Climate change presents a unique challenge for economics: it is the greatest and widest-ranging market failure ever seen.”
– Stern Review of the Economics of Climate Change
UC San Diego's Rady School of Management has partnered with Scripps Institution of Oceanography, to bring you “Climate Change and Business,” a two-day course to demystify scientific conclusions as they relate to business risks and investing opportunities. The Rady School and Scripps have assembled a panel of national experts in science, media, finance, corporate governance and business to discuss how climate change impacts your bottom line.
Although global warming has become a household phrase only in recent years, Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been a global leader in the science of climate change for half a century. In the face of controversy and debate over this hot topic, separating the scientific truths from media hype and spin has become increasingly difficult.
Get the tools you need to navigate through the clouded landscape of climate change talk, and make smart decisions about the impact of these environmental challenges on your business.
Upon completing this course, you will:
- Understand the realities of climate change
- Separate truth from spin in the media
- Identify and capitalize on opportunities
- Recognize and mitigate risk
- Gain successful operating strategies and tactics
Companies in impacted industries should send:
- Board members
- Senior business executives
- Risk managers
- Investment managers
- Private investors
Impacted industries include:
- Commodities (Energy, Agriculture, etc.)
- Insurance/Reinsurance
- Finance
- Investment Banking
- Retail
- Beverages (Vineyards, Soft Drinks, etc.)
- Leisure Services (Amusement Parks, Ski Resorts, etc.)
- Technology
The Climate Change and Business program hosted by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Rady School is unique from other recent climate change programs. Simply put, the focus is on education and practicality rather than ideology and policy.
Our approach is to provide business leaders with an executive education course focused on:
- an objective view of the most recent scientific conclusions from some of the world's leading climate scientists
- tools for non-scientists to discern scientific fact from science fiction in the media
- tools for business professionals to quantify financial risk and capitalize on investment opportunities presented by climate change
This program provides practical applications and tools for participants to take back to their own offices or boardrooms.
Day 1: Climate of Change
- Morning: Converting the inconvenient truth to full disclosure (scientific facts)
- Afternoon: Cutting the haze (from science to spin)
Day 2: The Financial Climate
